First Impression: R.O.S.E. Online

I played a little more R.O.S.E. Online again but I’m not really into the cartoony feel of it. Everyone looks like children, and that might not be so bad if they were children. I was thinking they must be until my character found a new outfit. Now I worry about the sanity of the people who worked on this game and the children around them in life. If your characters are going to look like children, you should not dress them up like slutty women, that’s just sick and wrong.

Conquer Online: Newbie Led Astray

I’ve decided to revisit Conquer Online for a review. I started over on a different server with a new character to regain a feel of it and see how newbie friendly the game is.
Newbie Newbie looking out from Birth Village

While running around killing pheasants a trojan guy came running up to me. I fled toward a guard just in case he was going to try and kill me. Instead he invited me to his party, but just stood there, so I went back to killing. Finally he asked me to follow and slowly lead me down toward the apes. Seriously he ran the whole way, he didn’t jump which is quicker. He was really bad at power leveling though. He wouldn’t pick a spawn. Then he switched to an archer and kept flying around leaving the little Newb in tow on the ground where the monsters would target her instead of the flying archer. Good thing I’ve played before and know how to jump away. Eventually I got left out in the wilderness and had to make my way to Ape City for safety. Good thing I’ve played before and knew where the city was. I can’t imagine how horrible it’d be for a true newb to be taken out and left like that.

Oh, and as you can see from the above image, I got her a new hairdo.

Conquer Online: Meteors and Forgotten Chars

I decided to go through and see if I could remember my accounts and passwords on Conquer. I got all but one of them, which I think is pretty cool. It’s been so long since I played last I decided to see if I could remember how to play as well. Analda, my little lv 70 archer leapt around shooting things and found a meteor in the first five minutes of game play. I’ve only found a handful of those in my entire time spent on Conquer so I thought that was pretty cool. Go newbie archer!
Analda found a met

I also found my character of Newbie Goddess who was a warrior on Conquer. She also has blue hair, how odd. But that’s close to the teal color she has now on Cabal. Maybe I’ll try to keep that theme with her when I can.

Yohoho Puzzle Pirates

Camera
This is not an issue, as Puzzle Pirates is not a moving 3d environment. The camera is fixed always in a place that makes it easy to see the world and the player has no control over the camera.

Controls
This is a point and click game but moving around the world is very easy. Activating the puzzles and doing anything your pirate needs to do it very easy to do with the controls. 4 out of 5.

Newb Friendly
YPP is very easy to pick up and play by anyone of any age. The game even starts you out looking at the mission board where you can select missions that will teach the player how to do pirate things and move about. The game makes it clear where to get more help and offers several choices to do so. 5 out of 5.

Visually Pleasing
The game is a bit cartoony looking and looks more 2d than 3d, but I don’t notice any visual flaws. The style isn’t for everyone. 3 out of 5

Lack of Chat Spam
There is no global chat system. Players must be in a chat circle with others payers, in the same building, or on the same ship. On the occasion another player will try to spam, but the power to stop spam is in the hands of your own player. You can mute, blackspot, or plank if you are on your own ship or in your house. Spammers are also often complained to the OMs and reported. 5 out of 5

Gear Varity
Any pirate that can afford it can wear almost anything they wish to buy at the tailor stall. They can purchase any sword they can afford, as well as any bludgeon. A pirate even has a wide range of different ship types of which to buy and pillage in. All of which have a large range of colors, even ships can be painted. 5 out of 5

Custom Chars
You can not pick your height or body type, but there is a nice selection of hair styles and hair colors. There is also a nice selection of skin tones. At anytime a player wishes they can buy potions in-game to change any of this. The ability to change these things after the fact, increases this game’s score to a 4 out of 5

Custom Build
You can work on whatever puzzles you wish as you wish, you don’t even have to be a pirate but can sit around the inn all day playing various card games or other parlor games. There are no levels and attributes, just standings and rankings. 5 out of 5.

Community
This game is highly social so naturally it’ll have a large variety of good players and bad trolls. The community will also change and be affected by which ocean you choose to be on. Often you’ll be lucky enough to find a good crew and flag and will focus on them as your community, but the politics of the game is in the hands of the players and it’s dealing with the drama that brings this score down to a 3 out of 5.

Player Ran
This game is very player ran. The economics, the politics, almost everything is in the hands of the players. Players take and control islands, building shops on them as they see fit. Player run stalls of all variety to control the economics. 5 out of 5.

Player Houses
You get a shack for free with two cheap pieces of furniture. There is a large variety of house types to buy in the game however with a large variety of furniture to place in them. Like everything else the paint colors of almost everything is up to the player in question. 5 out of 5

Pets, Mounts, and Familiars
There are no mounts in Puzzle Pirates, but there are a range of pets to pick from. Each player gets a rat for free of random color. Familiars are more expensive and harder to come by, but there are different types and colors for them as well. 4 out of 5.

Cabal Online: The Revolution of Action

Camera
The first thing I noticed about Cabal Online was the camera. Hate the default camera with a passion and found it very hard to see where I was going and what I was doing. Even after I learned how to put the camera in free mode, I still find I constantly have to adjust it, thus the camera gets a low score. 1 out of 5.

Controls
This is a point and click game, trying to move around by the standard W and S keys will cause frustration. There might be some trick to it that you learn after playing for over 100 hours, but I doubt it. And sometimes when I try to click on a creature to target it, I’d run past the creature instead. That happened enough times to bring the controls score down to a 2 out of 5.

Newb Friendly
The game is actually pretty newb friendly. If new players take the quests right away the game does walk them through the locations of shops and some controls. The creatures for newbs to fight are right outside of the towns and easy to access. There is even a novice channel for newbs to train on without fear of being PKd. I’ll give the newb friendliness of this game a 4 out of 5.

Visually Pleasing
This may sound like a strange category, but I have art friends and agree with them that a game has to look good to be fun. From a gamer’s point of view, the textures are nice and the world is imaginative. As far as free games go this one is really easy on the eyes. I could see seams of environment structures and did find one mesh where the norms were pointed the wrong way. That brought the score down to a 3 out of 5.

Chat Spam (lack thereof)
I hate spammers. There is a real issue of bots from sites that sell gold sitting in towns and spamming chat so fast you can not see anything else that is said. You can turn off certain chats, like local to avoid that, but then miss what others say to you out on the field. You can also put these spammers on block, but must do it several times a day as the bots replace themselves. The spammers try to come up with names that are not easy to type in, like combinations of little Ls and capital Is which look the same in the game font. A player can click on the name of a spammer to put them on block, but this requires hunting them down and the solution isn’t immediately evident to newbs. I can block the spam, but something needs to be done about it. Not too much trouble of newbs spamming for help and money though, as they can not shout until they are level fourty. 3 out of 5.

Gear Varity
Depending on what class you pick you’re very limited to what weapons and armor you use. Sometimes if you’re lucky you can pick from two styles of swords, and really high level players might have more armor choices, but overall the gear Varity is very low. 1 out of 5

Custom Chars
There are several hair styles and colors to pick from, but not many and only a hand full of faces. You can not change the color of your skin, your height, and only have one body type to pick from. You’ll end up with many twins in the game. 1 out of 5

Custom Build
The class you pick determines your build for you based on the requirements for armor and weapons for your build. 1 out of 5

Community
A stranger gave one of my newb items, which I found to be very nice and I didn’t find it difficult to make friends. Every community has it’s trouble makers and trolls and Cabal is no different, but overall the community is alright. My rating on this is a little off, because I didn’t actually try the forums. 3 out of 5

Player Ran
Nothing is player ran in this game, except guilds. 0 out of 5

Player Houses
If they exist, after two weeks of playing I still have not heard of them. This score might change in the future if they get player houses. 0 out of 5

Pets, Mounts, and Familiars
High level players with the right amount of money can attain pets of various types. Some of them I found to be really cute. Mounts are not animals in this game, but there are cool things like bikes and boards to ride. 4 out of 5

Facebook Flair for Cabal Online

I made some flair for the Facebook applicaitions pieces of flair. When I did a search for Cabal Online flair, there was only a few pieces that came up. So I made one of my char NewbieGoddess running away that says, 'I'm not afraid to run from you."

Of course over on facebook it's rounded and looks like a button.

Alcaran

My first Alcaran was in Conquer. She was a deputy leader of the guild Solace, but only made it to lv 110. She was often found dancing in the plaza of Twin City. She tried different hair colors and styles, but ended up ginger with twin buns. When I recreate her I try to get the same basic look.

Here is what she looks like today in Conquer.

I also made her over on Gaia Online. I was under the impression that was a role play site when I joined it, but didn’t find that to be true. Not to the extent I was used to, but the avatars were cute.

Alcaran is also over on Yohoho Puzzle Pirates in the crew Dark Horizon under the flag of Brink of Dawn.

More recently, Alcaran showed up in Cabal Online as a blader and joined the guild Knights of the Round.

For Toni

If you can't see the server list your login window might be scaled down, just lick the arrow to make it larger.

That should get you the list of servers which are called worlds in this game.

If this doesn't help you, then I've no idea what your problem might be.
